A yard deck over concrete
A low frame over the old yard, with a slight fall so rain runs off.
Heaton
Tyneside flats and terraced houses with compact rear yards and back lanes. A well-designed deck can turn a concrete yard into the best room in the house.
The gardens here
Heaton's streets of Tyneside flats and terraces usually have small rear yards, often concrete, with a gate onto the back lane. Upper and lower flats sometimes share or split a yard, which shapes what can go where.
Space is tight, so every detail matters: bins, bikes, washing and a place to sit all need a home.
What we design
A low frame over the old yard, with a slight fall so rain runs off.
Built-in seating along one wall and raised planters for some green.
A tidy slatted screen so the deck feels like a garden, not a yard.
Before we draw
Materials come in through the yard gate, so we size boards and frame timbers for the lane.
Concrete yards often drain to one gully. We keep that working and accessible under the deck.
Questions
Usually on a low frame over it, as long as the concrete is sound and we keep the drainage working.
Not if everyone agrees. We'll design around access and anything shared.
